World Athletics Championships: 5 athletes looking to defend, set world records

The National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary, will host the 2023 World Athletics Championship from August 19 to 27. Over 2,000 athletes from more than 200 countries are set to participate in what is being touted as the third-largest global sporting event.

Among the athletes preparing to either uphold their existing world records or establish new ones are the following five individuals:

1. Tobi Amusan (100-meter hurdles)

The Nigerian track and field star, who faced suspension due to missing multiple drug tests, has been included in the provisional list released by the World Athletics Organization. Pending approval, she intends to defend her Women’s 100-meter hurdles World record of 12.12 seconds, which she set in Eugene, Oregon, USA, on July 24, 2022.

2. Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce (100 m)

Fraser-Pryce, holding the current 100 m World Championships record at 10.67 seconds, has reportedly opted out of the 200-meter race. She will focus on competing in the 100-meter sprint and the 4×100-meter relays, aiming to surpass Florence Delorez Griffith Joyner’s longstanding record of 10.49 seconds set in 1988.

3. Faith Kipyegon (1500 m and 5000 m)

The accomplished Kenyan middle- and long-distance runner has achieved remarkable success in 2023, claiming world record titles in the 1500 meters, mile, and 5000 meters. Kipyegon, aged 29, will represent Team Kenya in both the 1500 meters and 5000 meters events during the championship.

4. Ryan Crouser (men’s shot put)

Regarded as one of the greatest shot-putters in history, Crouser currently holds the world record for shot put with a distance of 23.56 meters. Impressively, he accounts for 10 out of the 14 farthest throws in shot put history.

5. Mutaz Essa Barshim (High Jump)

Barshim will lead Qatar’s team in the competition and aims to surpass the existing High Jump World Record of 2.45 meters, held by Javier Sotomayo since 1993. Notably, Barshim’s sportsmanship was evident in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where he and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi decided to share the gold title instead of pursuing a tie-breaker.

The 2023 World Athletics Championship is anticipated to showcase intense competition and potential record-breaking performances across various events.
