Why Nigeria was invited to G20 summit – Biden

United States President Joe Biden, who held a meeting with President Bola Tinubu during the G20 summit in New Delhi, India, stated that the meeting aimed to reaffirm the commitment of the United States to its relationship with Nigeria.

Biden emphasized that his administration is dedicated to the enduring friendship between the two nations and their people.

This information was conveyed in an official statement published on the White House website.

Biden commended the efforts of the Tinubu administration in implementing economic reforms in Nigeria.

The statement noted, “President Biden welcomed the Tinubu Administration’s measures to reform Nigeria’s economy and expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his strong leadership as the chair of the Economic Community of West African States in defending and upholding democracy and the rule of law in Niger and the broader region.”

Regarding Nigeria’s invitation to the G20 summit, the statement mentioned, “Nigeria’s invitation to the G20 Summit acknowledges Nigeria’s significant global role as the largest democracy and economy in Africa.”

Tinubu attended the two-day summit upon the special invitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He was accompanied by several ministers, including those responsible for foreign affairs, finance, communications, innovation, digital economy, industry, trade, and investment.

During the summit, Tinubu held bilateral meetings with the leaders of Germany, South Korea, and India. In his discussions with the German leader, Olaf Scholz, Tinubu highlighted the importance of expanding economic cooperation beyond merely establishing a financial framework. He also mentioned new incentives introduced by the Nigerian government to attract large-scale manufacturers like Volkswagen to invest in the country.

In response, the German Chancellor acknowledged the mutually beneficial nature of strengthening economic ties with Nigeria, expressing a desire to visit Nigeria in October to further advance these initiatives.

Additionally, President Tinubu is scheduled to meet with the leadership of the United Arab Emirates during a technical stopover in Abu Dhabi after departing from New Delhi, India.
