Nationalism flows in the veins of the British people. They value their monarchy, way of life, and their
ethos. Unfortunately, this has been carried into the footballing world by their coaches. If you take a
cursory look at the leading coaches in the world, you hardly find any Briton among them. Even in their
leagues, they have not been able to be among the top coaches that makes it thick. The problem is how
they see the football vis a vis their nationalistic attitude. An average British coach will look for a way to
filed British player(s) whether they fit into the style or not. Its like there is this feeling that British players
are not given their due, and something must be done. This is carried out at the detriment of the club
and its glory. David Moyes failed at Manchester United, and recently, Brendan Rogers equally failed at
Leicester City.
Let’s look at the British coaches that Chelsea has hired of recent. Potter came with a mindset to field
some players whether they deserved it or not. Players like Rueben Loftus-Cheek that added nothing
tangible to the Fulham squad, making them to be relegated in the 2021/2022 season. Most of the games
he played during his loan spell with Fulham, the team lost. Can you imagine Potter registering him in the
champions league, leaving world class striker like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang out? Also, statistics has
shown that almost all the games Loftus-Cheek played, Chelsea lost them all. Going further, Potter was
always in the habit of playing Reuben Loftus Cheek, and then bring in Conor Gallagher in the second
half. These are good players in their own right, but for a top-notch club like Chelsea, they are not even
qualified to grace the bench. Not all British players are in the team through blind nationalism of the
coach. Players like Recce James and Ben Chilwell are very good players that can play in any team in the
world. They deserve to be in that team.
After the disastrous reign of Potter, Frank Lampard was brought in. How he got the job lives in the
imagination of those who selected him. This was a serial failure with Everton being brought to a club
that is one of the best in the world. If one is to look at those advising the owners of Chelsea, you will find
them to be core British. Look at the reign of Lampard at Chelsea. He has played four games and lost all.
In the game against Brighton, Chelsea was playing secondary school football. You could see that
Lampard had no clue what is to be done. His naivety occasioned by blind nationalism raised its ugly head
again during the champions league match with Real Madrid. For a match of such magnitude, Trevor
Chalobah and Conor Gallagher were fielded when you have the likes of César Azpilicueta with the right
experience to handle such an occasion. Manson Mount who has not been in the team because of his
dwindling performances, has been brought back to reinforce the failures.
My advice to the owners of Chelsea is to get those who understand football. They are heading to a
freefall and if that happens, most of the British press will protect their own and vilify them. In their
quest to build a legacy through Chelsea, there should be balance between what the British want and
what they want. You cannot spend $600 million and bring in coaches without the right track record just
because you want to be loved by the locals. Football at the Premiership level is all about winning and
most of this rests solely on the kind of coach in the team. Bring back players like Peter Cech who can
give objective advice. Don’t use the rating of Frank Lampard in the media to make your judgements.
Most of the British media will support their own to the end. You can see what they were saying when
Potter was fired. Majority of them were saying that he was brought from the club where he had peace
and “progress” to Chelsea to be fired at will.
May Chelsea be revived again!
