Betsy Obaseki, the wife of the Governor of Edo State, has affirmed that her annual women’s football competition, the Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament, will continue to function as a platform for empowering and advocating for the rights of young girls.
Obaseki made this declaration during an event where the competition’s mascot and theme were unveiled. The tournament is scheduled to take place from October 23 to November 1 in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.
The competition, themed “End Gender-Based Violence,” has the objective of harnessing the sporting talents within the state and shedding light on the initiatives undertaken by the administration led by Governor Godwin Obaseki to combat gender-based violence in Edo State.
“Edo used to be the leading hub for human trafficking globally, but now we are nowhere near the top 10,” Obaseki emphasized. “So, we remain committed to empowering young girls and ensuring their well-being. In the first edition, the theme was ‘Girl Child Education,’ while the second edition focused on the ‘Fight Against Drug Abuse,’ which has become a widespread issue. For the third year, we are addressing gender-based violence, a pervasive problem in our state and across the country. Each year, we tackle one specific issue through the tournament until we make substantial progress, allowing our young people to realize their full potential,” added the First Lady of Edo.
This year’s edition will feature thirteen teams competing for honors. In Group A, there are Edo Queens, Naija Ratels, and Remo Stars, while Group B consists of Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, and Confluence Queens. Group C includes Rivers Angels, Robo FC, Fortress Ladies, and Heartland Queens, and Group D features Delta Queens, the reigning NWFL champions, Ekiti Queens, and Osun Babes.
