UCL: Unfortunate Meret hands Madrid win at Napoli

Alex Meret’s unfortunate own goal gifted Real Madrid a 3-2 victory against Napoli on Wednesday, propelling the Spanish giants to the top of Champions League Group C.

The Italian national goalkeeper, Meret, was powerless to prevent Federico Valverde’s potent shot from hitting the crossbar and rebounding into the net off his outstretched arm, occurring 12 minutes before the end of an exhilarating match in Naples.

This unlucky bounce maintained Real Madrid’s flawless start in the group stage and put them three points ahead of both the Italian champions and Braga. Braga had secured a 3-2 win against Union Berlin earlier on Tuesday.

Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham scored Real Madrid’s other goals, providing the visiting team with a halftime lead after Leo Ostigard had given the hosts a 19th-minute advantage with a header.

Napoli’s hopes were briefly reignited when Piotr Zielinski converted a 54th-minute penalty that was questionably awarded for a handball by Nacho while contesting Victor Osimhen.

Nigeria’s forward, Osimhen, made his return to the Napoli lineup after reconciling with the fans following a dispute with the club over an offensive video posted on social media, where he assured his countrymen that they were not racist.
