Torunarigha eyes AFCON, W’Cup glories with Eagles

Newly debuted Super Eagles defender, Jordan Torunarigha, has set his sights on winning the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next year with Nigeria and helping the team qualify for the 2026 World Cup, as reported by The PUNCH.

The Super Eagles will kickstart their campaign for a fourth AFCON title against Ivory Coast, as they are drawn in the same group with the hosts, along with Equatorial Guinea and Guinea Bissau in Group A.

Torunarigha, who made his debut for Nigeria in an international friendly against Mozambique in Portugal, expressed his readiness to give his all for the country.

“I have two significant goals with Nigeria: the Africa Cup of Nations next year and the World Cup in 2026. I will, and we will, give everything for that,” he stated.

Having previously represented Germany at the youth level and also taking part in the 2021 Olympic Games with the German team, Torunarigha is now fully committed to Nigeria.

Torunarigha, the son of Ojokojo Torunarigha, a former Eagles forward, spent 75 minutes on the field in his debut match before being substituted for Calvin Bassey during Nigeria’s 3-2 victory over Mozambique.

Reflecting on his debut, the 26-year-old defender described it as a “very special” moment.

“It was a very special moment, and I’m really proud. Nigeria is a team with many top players and great characters, and it’s enjoyable to be on the pitch with them. We won, which is always the most important thing. We would have liked to keep a clean sheet, but it was fun on the field. I hope the coach and my teammates were happy,” he remarked.

The Gent defender also spoke about how proud his family was following his call-up to the Super Eagles.

“Of course, we discussed the topic a lot before the call-up. My dad and my entire family are very proud and happy,” he said.

“They were there when I was first invited by Nigeria and will continue to support me in the future. If I need advice from my dad, he’s always there for me.”
