The Oyo State Police apprehend a grandfather on charges of selling his day-old grandchild for N700,000.

The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a grandfather named Monday Chukwuka for allegedly selling his one-day-old grandchild for N700,000.

According to a statement issued by the State Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, the arrest was made at a hideout in the Ibafo area of Ogun State based on credible intelligence. The grandfather, who is the biological father of a young girl who gave birth to the child, has confessed to his crime.

The suspect reportedly took the baby from his daughter after she delivered the child, falsely claiming that he would hand the child over to someone who would care for her. The police recovered a bundle of new birth certificates and equipment used for baby deliveries from the location.

The suspects, including Monday, couldn’t provide a satisfactory explanation about the parentage of the babies found at the factory. Monday sold the baby because he couldn’t afford to care for his teenage daughter and the child. The proceeds were used to rent a shop and buy goods.

Favour Chukwuka, another suspect, claimed that a childless couple tasked her to find a baby and offered her N50,000, which she handed over to Monday, keeping N650,000 for herself.

The statement revealed that the incident occurred on July 10, 2023, and involved the harvesting of a day-old baby girl from her teenage mother, Sarah Chukwuka, in Oyo town, with the subsequent sale of the child to a criminal cartel running a baby factory in Abia State.

“The suspect provided a detailed account of how he transported the one-day-old baby to Abia State and sold her to the proprietor of a baby factory situated in Obehi, Okwa West, Abia State, for the sum of N700,000.

Further investigation led law enforcement to Abia State, where a well-coordinated raid was executed on the baby factory. During the operation, a female suspect named Popoola Bunmi and four other accomplices, identified as Chinwedu Peter, Chidinma Blessing, Chuckwu Christopher, and Favour Chukwu, were all apprehended in connection with the criminal enterprise.”
