On Wednesday, the leadership of the organized labor announced that they have secured “deeper commitments” from the federal government in their efforts to alleviate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal. The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, revealed this after meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja. These discussions come amidst nationwide protests that occurred on Wednesday.

Ajaero mentioned that the NLC leadership will hold further consultations with the National Executive Council during their meeting on Thursday. President Tinubu summoned the NLC leadership as part of efforts to persuade them to end the ongoing protests.

Regarding the meeting with the President, Ajaero stated that the Congress discussed the issues that led to the protests and that President Tinubu made some commitments beyond what was mentioned in his broadcast. However, there are still some matters requiring immediate attention.

When asked if they were ready to end the protests, Ajaero explained that the decision would not rest with one person and that they will have to consult with their colleagues before reaching final resolutions at the National Executive Council meeting on Thursday. On Tuesday, the labor leaders had insisted on continuing the protests, as they believed the government’s offers fell short of their expectations.
