“The Nigerian Customs advises Nigerians to commence the clearance of goods from the ports in Cotonou.”

“The Acting Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi, announced on Tuesday that Nigerian importers would soon have the option to clear their goods from the ports in Cotonou, Benin Republic. This revelation came during a meeting in Abuja following a two-day visit by the Director-General and senior officials of the customs service from Benin Republic.

Customs officials from both nations reached various agreements during the two-day gathering aimed at enhancing trade relations between Nigeria and Benin Republic while also combatting smuggling.

In response to a question during the event, Adewale explained, ‘We are building confidence in the system offered by the Republic of Benin; our importers are using their ports, and vice versa. If there are people in Benin Republic who want to use our ports, we try to build trust in our systems.’

He further clarified that this agreement would enable Nigerian importers to clear their goods at Cotonou ports, including the payment of duties on eligible items, and then freely bring those goods into Nigeria.

Addressing concerns about vehicle smuggling, he noted that this arrangement applies to all goods arriving at Cotonou ports, and duty assessment and payment would occur there before entry into Nigerian territory, similar to the process at Lagos or Port Harcourt ports. However, he emphasized that the detailed steps to implement this arrangement were yet to be determined, but it was a significant milestone towards achieving this goal.

Adewale stressed that the partnership between the two nations would improve customs administration, facilitate trade, and promote regional cooperation within the West African region.”
