The Nigerian Bar Association is urging an investigation and legal action against Senator Bulkachuwa after he admitted to obstructing the course of justice.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, has urged for an investigation and legal action against Senator Adamu Muhammad Bulkachuwa, who represents Bauchi North Senatorial District, based on his statements made in the Senate on Monday.

In a personally signed statement issued after the National Judicial Council (NJC) 102nd Statutory Meeting, the NBA President highlighted that Senator Bulkachuwa’s remarks clearly indicated his involvement in distorting and interfering with the fair administration of justice in Nigeria. Therefore, he called for an investigation and prosecution of the senator.

During the 9th Assembly valedictory session, Senator Bulkachuwa referred to confidential dealings he had with his Senate colleagues and acknowledged encroaching upon his wife’s freedom and independence while she was President of the Court of Appeal. The former Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, interrupted him during his speech, expressing disagreement with the direction of his comments.

The NBA President emphasized that if Senator Bulkachuwa had not been interrupted, he might have revealed more significant details regarding the confidential dealings he allegedly had with his colleagues, where he claimed to have done his best and often succeeded.

Maikyau further pointed out that due to the office held by Senator Bulkachuwa’s wife, the nature of the help he provided to his colleagues was evident. He noted that these colleagues had thanked him only verbally, indicating the impact of his actions on the integrity and independence of the judiciary.

At the NJC 102nd meeting, the NBA President expressed his concern about Senator Bulkachuwa’s conduct and its direct assault on the integrity of the judiciary. The NJC strongly condemned the senator’s actions as an affront to the independence and integrity of the judiciary.

Maikyau informed the NJC that while the NBA would always defend the honor, integrity, and independence of the judiciary, they would not hesitate to confront anyone, whether within or outside the legal profession, who undermines judicial independence or the impartiality of judicial processes.

In light of these circumstances, the NBA President called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to promptly summon Senator Ahmad Muhammad Bulkachuwa for questioning and proceed with prosecution. He mentioned that he would personally write letters to both the IGP and ICPC Chairman to address this matter.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the NBA’s commitment to upholding and defending the integrity and independence of the judiciary in Nigeria, within the boundaries of the law, regardless of the individuals involved.
