In June 2023, the National Bureau of Statistics reported that the average cost of bus transportation within Nigerian cities surged from N649.59 in May 2023 to N1,285.41. This marks a substantial 98% increase, equivalent to N636, within just one month. These figures were extracted from the Transport Fare Watch report of the NBS for June 2023, which included detailed breakdowns of bus journeys within cities per drop on a fixed route, as well as charges for intercity (state route) bus journeys and other modes of transportation.

Comparing to the previous year, bus fares saw a significant year-on-year rise of 120.63%, with commuters paying N582.61 in June 2022. Notably, the average fare for intercity bus journeys per drop escalated to N5,686.49 in June 2023, reflecting a 42.09% increase compared to May 2023’s figure of N4,002.16. Similarly, on a year-on-year basis, this fare rose by 55.25%, up from N3,662.87 in June 2022.
