Julius Abure, the chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has informed supporters about alleged preparations by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for a possible rerun election. Abure called on LP supporters to be prepared to rally behind the party in the event that the presidential election petition tribunal orders a rerun of the 2023 presidential election.

Following the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that Bola Tinubu of the APC emerged as the winner of the closely contested February 25 election, LP’s Peter Obi, who came in third place, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who came in second, separately initiated legal challenges against Tinubu’s victory.

Both candidates have requested that the tribunal declare them as the legitimate winner or order a fresh election, potentially with Tinubu disqualified. During an online meeting with the Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy, Abure revealed his information about the APC’s alleged preparations for a rerun election.

Abure emphasized the need for support in the event of a rerun election, as there are rumors suggesting the government’s involvement in such preparations. He urged LP supporters to be prepared and engaged if the election is nullified.

While seeking support, Abure stated that the LP is primarily interested in having Obi declared as the winner of the February contest and is not actively seeking a rerun verdict. He expressed confidence in the evidence presented by the party to prove Obi’s victory over Tinubu and Atiku.

The LP’s legal team concluded its case against Tinubu at the tribunal in late June, and Tinubu’s legal team completed its defense in early July. A verdict from the tribunal is expected in the coming weeks, but the case is anticipated to proceed to the Supreme Court.
