The Lagos State Government has halted its intended mass burial for the #EndSARS victims.

The Lagos State Government has decided to postpone the planned mass burial of the 103 bodies recovered in the aftermath of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests. This decision was conveyed by the State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, in an interview with The Punch on October 9, 2023.

The suspension of the mass burial plan is attributed to the controversy that surrounded its initial announcement in July. Omotoso explained that the state government had intended to proceed with the mass burial, but due to the controversies that emerged at that time, it was put on hold. This pause allows individuals more time and opportunity to identify if their relatives are among the recovered bodies.

It’s worth recalling that a leaked memo dated July 19, 2023, had revealed the government’s resolution to conduct a mass burial for the 103 corpses, with an approved budget of N61,285,000 for the burial expenses.

Omotoso clarified that the suspension of the mass burial aims to provide an extended period for people to identify their loved ones among the recovered bodies. He emphasized that despite the government’s readiness to proceed with the burial, no one has come forward to identify any of the corpses. The decision to give people more time for identification aligns with the government’s previous announcement about the mass burial.

Contrary to the belief that the 103 corpses were exclusively those of peaceful protesters who were shot by soldiers at the Lekki toll gate on Tuesday, October 20, 2020, the Lagos State Government has maintained that these bodies also include victims of violence that occurred following the Lekki incident.
