The Labour Party has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu over the initial batch of ministerial nominees unveiled by the Senate. The party referred to the nominees as a collection of ‘recycled, spent forces, and anti-democratic elements.’
The announcement of the nominees triggered mixed reactions, with some expressing disappointment at the absence of anticipated ‘technocrats’ on the list. Many young Nigerians on social media raised concerns, suggesting that politicians on the list were merely rewarded for their roles in the last election.
Among the nominees were former governors like Nasir el-Rufai, Dave Umahi, Badaru Abubakar, and Nyesom Wike, as well as seven women, including Uju Ohanenye, Hannatu Musawa, and Betta Edu.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, issued a statement expressing their disapproval of the piecemeal submission of the ministerial list, which they believe goes against the Electoral Act. The party felt that the list did not represent the wealth of talents and resources Nigeria has and was disappointed that youthful and result-oriented technocrats were not appointed as earlier promised.
Furthermore, the party criticized the delay in presenting the full list within the required 60 days and expressed concern over the exclusion of nominations from about 10 states, which violates the laws of the land. The party found it puzzling that Tinubu, who has aspired to be president for over two decades, had not formed a solid team qualified for ministerial positions across the country. The party stated that the Electoral Act’s timeframe of 60 days had compelled the government to submit the list and wondered how long it would have taken the APC leadership to form the government if not for this requirement.
