“The inclusion of the African Union in the G-20 will empower Africa to address global challenges.”

“African Union’s inclusion in the G20 on Saturday marks a significant step, enabling the continent to play a more effective role in addressing global challenges, according to AU Commission head Moussa Faki Mahamat.

He expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I welcome the African Union’s full membership in the G20. This long-advocated membership provides a favorable platform for advocating on behalf of Africa and making meaningful contributions to tackle global challenges.” He shared this message on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The African Union boasts 55 member states, although six junta-ruled nations are currently suspended. Together, they represent a GDP of $3 trillion and a population of approximately 1.4 billion.

The G20, which includes 19 countries and the European Union, represents 85% of the world’s GDP, with South Africa being the only African member.

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, present at the summit, expressed the continent’s eagerness to advance its global aspirations through the G20 platform.

Kenyan President William Ruto emphasized that this inclusion will provide Africa with a voice and visibility to promote its interests within this significant body. He also mentioned that the AU will advocate for outcomes from the recently concluded Africa Climate Summit, including reforms of international financial institutions and multilateral development banks.”
