In the 10th Assembly, members of the House of Representatives are slated to receive a combined sum of N54 billion for their respective constituency projects, with each member receiving N150 million.
An anonymous lawmaker explained that these constituency allowances are among the limited privileges that lawmakers have to directly contribute to the development of their constituencies.
Constituency or zonal intervention projects in Nigeria involve development initiatives established within the constituencies of members of the state Houses of Assembly, House of Representatives, or Senators, and are funded through various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.
Such projects often carry banners indicating that they were executed under the auspices of a particular lawmaker.
The remuneration and perks of lawmakers have consistently sparked debates due to their often opaque nature.
During the ninth assembly, it was revealed that each member of the House of Representatives received N100 million, while each Senator received N200 million for their constituency projects.
However, in the midst of economic challenges and the call for citizens to endure hardship in anticipation of better times under the ‘Renewed Hope’ of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration, the constituency allowance for lawmakers has been raised by an additional N50 million.
The lawmaker stated, “In the House of Representatives, our constituency allowance is N150 million. This allocation presents us with the opportunity to initiate one or more projects that benefit our constituencies.”
“We often lack direct control over significant projects. Therefore, this allocation can be seen as a form of relief that allows us to contribute to our constituencies. Many of us frequently end up using our personal funds to finance the projects we undertake for our constituents.
“This year, the House of Representatives will receive N150m, while I’m unsure about the Senate’s allocation.”
