“The Election Tribunal upholds Tinubu’s win.”

“The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal has upheld Bola Tinubu’s election as President of Nigeria. Justice Haruna Tsammani, leading a five-person panel, declared, ‘This petition lacks merit, and I affirm Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the duly elected President of Nigeria. The parties are responsible for their costs.’

In a unanimous decision on September 6, 2023, the tribunal dismissed the petition from the Labour Party’s Peter Obi and the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar, who contested Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 election. The tribunal found that the observed irregularities during the polls weren’t significant enough to invalidate the election’s outcome, as they weren’t widespread or systematic.

This ruling marks a crucial victory for Tinubu and holds implications for Nigeria’s democracy. Obi and Atiku filed their petition on March 8, 2023, citing various irregularities such as vote-buying, ballot box stuffing, and voter disenfranchisement.

Additionally, the tribunal declared it lacked the authority to hear the Allied Peoples Movement’s petition against VP Shettima’s double nomination and dismissed it. The tribunal also deemed the Labour Party’s petition as ‘clearly based on rhetoric’ and lacking evidence to support its claims. Lastly, some aspects of Atiku Abubakar’s petitions were struck out by the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal.”

“The portions that were removed from the petitions included the PDP’s assertion that Bola Tinubu from the All Progressives Congress was ineligible to participate in the recent presidential election.

The tribunal conducted hearings on this petition for over six months. Throughout the proceedings, the petitioners provided evidence of the alleged irregularities, but the respondents, including Tinubu, presented evidence demonstrating that these irregularities did not impact the election results.

In their ruling, the tribunal stated that the petitioners couldn’t establish their case beyond a reasonable doubt. The judges concluded that the irregularities observed during the elections were insufficient to nullify the election’s outcome.”
