The ECOWAS meeting commences under heightened security measures.

The Extraordinary gathering of ECOWAS Heads of States and Government is commencing in Abuja with heightened security measures. This important meeting, held at the Conference Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, aims to reach significant resolutions concerning the political crisis in Niger Republic.

Despite strong opposition to military intervention in the landlocked country, there are high expectations for ECOWAS leaders to propose political solutions rather than resorting to force.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu is chairing the meeting, joined by Presidents Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, Umaro Sissoco of Guinea Bissau, Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire, and Nana Akofo-Ado of Ghana. Other attendees include Presidents Macky Sall of Senegal and Patrice Talon of Benin Republic. Presidents Everiste Ndayishimiye of Burundi and Mohamed Ghazouani of Mauritania are also participating.

As of the time of this report, Togolese President Faure Essozimna Eyadéma and President Adama Barrow of The Gambia were still expected to join the meeting.

ECOWAS comprises 15 member states, namely Benin Republic, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote D’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

It remains uncertain whether Mali and Burkina Faso, which previously declared their support for Niger’s new military government in defiance of ECOWAS sanctions, will be present at the meeting. Further updates will follow.
