On Wednesday, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State inaugurated the commencement of the construction of a 23 metric tonnes Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and 1,500 standard cubic metres Liquefied Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) project in Lafia.
The project, in partnership with Greenville LNG, aims to provide clean energy as an alternative to the use of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) due to the high cost of the commodity after the removal of subsidies by the Federal Government. Governor Sule emphasized that the project aligns with his administration’s vision for a prosperous and economically developed state.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nasarawa Investment and Development Agency (NASIDA), highlighted that the project is the first of its kind in the North Central zone of the country. With a $2 million USD investment led by Greenville LNG, it serves as a catalyst for other businesses in line with the state government’s industrialization agenda.
Abdullahi explained that the collaboration between the government and Greenville LNG aims to facilitate virtual gas supply for businesses and individuals in Nasarawa State and the broader North Central region. The project’s introduction of LNG and LCNG usage for heavy-duty trucks, vehicles, and tricycles will address the skyrocketing fuel prices resulting from the subsidy removal. It is poised to revolutionize the transportation industry in Nasarawa State by mitigating fuel shortages and promoting gas usage and distribution within the region.
Additionally, the project promotes clean energy in the North Central region and provides a cost-saving alternative fuel for diesel-operated vehicles, potentially leading to up to 25% savings in running costs. It also presents investment opportunities for local businesses in Nasarawa State’s industrial and auto-gas sectors.
Ritu Sahajwalla, Managing Director of Greenville LNG, expressed that the project will further enhance the industrialization drive of Governor Sule’s administration and attract more investments to the state. The company plans to establish another facility in Karu Local Government Area following the completion of the Lafia facility later this year.
The ceremony also included the official handover of the Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) for the project to Greenville LNG. NASIDA facilitated the project through the state’s one-stop-shop initiative, and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Nasarawa State Government and Greenville LNG was signed in November 2022.
