The African Union has instructed the leaders of the Niger coup to return to their barracks within 15 days.

The African Union has set a 15-day deadline for the leaders of the military coup in Niger Republic to return to their barracks and reinstate democratic governance. The AU has warned of serious consequences if the military chiefs fail to comply with this demand. This warning from the AU follows similar rebuffs from the US and the European Union towards the coup leaders who ousted President Mohammed Bazoum, the democratically elected leader in 2021, marking the country’s first civilian handover of power. On Friday, General Abdourahmane Tchiani, the head of the presidential guards unit, declared himself as Niger’s new leader, citing reasons such as insecurity, economic challenges, and corruption as motives for seizing power.
