Yoruba Nation agitator and separatist, Sunday Adeyemo, known as Sunday Igboho, has been released from custody in the Republic of Benin after a two-year legal ordeal. Confirming his release to the Nigerian Tribune, Igboho stated that he is now free to return to Nigeria and visit any country in the world.
He expressed, “I am now free to return to Nigeria and visit any country in the world. I have met all the legal requirements for my bail that were imposed a few years ago, and I will be heading back to Nigeria, my home country, very soon.”
Igboho initially encountered legal troubles with the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari when he declared the sovereignty of the Yoruba Nation. In pursuit of his cause, he launched a campaign to expel killer herdsmen and kidnappers from Yorubaland. This action prompted the Department of State Services (DSS) to initiate a manhunt for him.
Following a raid on his residence in Ibadan by DSS operatives, Igboho fled to Cotonou, where he was arrested in July 2021. The DSS reported the discovery of illegal arms, including seven AK-47 rifles and a substantial quantity of ammunition at his residence. He was apprehended at the Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic while attempting to escape to Germany, after the DSS had declared him a wanted individual.
