According to a Reuters report, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) has temporarily ceased the loading of Nigeria’s Forcados crude oil due to a possible leak at the export terminal.
Shell has confirmed that injections into the Forcados Oil Terminal were halted on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, following reports of a sheen in the mooring area.
Workers observed the sheen near the single-buoy mooring facility, leading to the suspension of activities while investigations are conducted.
In June 2023, the Forcados crude oil terminal recorded the highest output among the seven major crude terminals in Nigeria, as reported by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
Throughout the year, crude oil production at the Forcados terminal has ranged between 5 and 7 million barrels per day, with minor declines in March and April 2023.
In May 2023, the Forcados terminal in Delta state boosted crude oil and condensate output to 7.01 million barrels of oil per day (mbpd), compared to 5.78 mbpd in April 2023.
Data from the upstream regulator indicates that Nigeria produced 1.25 mbpd of crude oil in June 2023, along with 55,088 blended condensates and 176,030 unblended condensates.
These figures amount to a total of 1.48 mbpd of crude production during the highlighted period. Despite a slight decrease in the output of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)-13, Nigeria and Iraq have managed to mitigate the impact of other countries’ output cuts.
