Africa Check has debunked a Facebook post that claimed a “Russian boy” hacked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) website and released “authentic” election results, indicating that Peter Obi of the Labour Party won the 2023 presidential election instead of Bola Tinubu, who was officially declared the winner by INEC.
According to the fact-checking organization, the post included a photo of a young white man in a suit. However, Africa Check revealed that the boy in the photo is actually Nikolai Desyatnichenko, a 16-year-old high school student from Novy Urengoy in Siberia, northern Russia. This information was based on a Google reverse image search, and there is no evidence that this individual had any involvement in Nigeria’s election results.
INEC’s chief press secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, also dismissed the claim as “fake news” and clarified that there was no hacking of the official INEC website or its Results Viewing Portal at any point before, during, or after the 2023 General Election.
Additionally, Dubawa, another Nigerian fact-checking organization, rated as misleading the claim that Peter Obi won in 19 states during the February 25 poll. They found that results from polling units across Nigeria were still being uploaded on the IReV portal at the time of their report, making such claims premature and unsubstantiated.
