The newly appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Yemi Cardoso, has reassured the Nigerian people that his leadership at the apex bank will remain focused and not be swayed by political influences. Cardoso made these commitments during his Senate screening on September 26, 2023. In response to a question from Senate President Godswill Akpabio regarding the potential for political interference, Cardoso firmly stated that he and his deputies would not allow anyone to divert their attention from their responsibilities.

He emphasized the importance of trust in the position and pledged to uphold that trust by doing what is right at the right time. Cardoso’s nomination was ultimately confirmed by the Senate, making him the 11th Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. Additionally, the Senate approved the nominations of Emem Nnana Usoro, Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Philip Ikeazor, and Bala Bello as Deputy Governors of the apex bank. Cardoso assumed office following the suspension and subsequent resignation of his predecessor, Godwin Emefiele, in June.
