Plessis sends strong message to Adesanya

Dricus Du Plessis is determined to be the one to permanently remove Israel Adesanya from his championship position in the UFC middleweight division. There is already a built-in rivalry between the current two-time champion and South Africa’s top fighter.

While Du Plessis has earned a shot at the title in the eyes of Adesanya through his words, he wants to prove himself through his actions and become undeniable. He continues this process by facing former champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 290 in Las Vegas next weekend.

Du Plessis stated, “Be careful what you wish for. At the end of the day, I don’t care if he hopes or wants it. I will win on my own terms, and it’s inevitable, as I’ve said. When I fight for the belt, I will fight Adesanya. He says he hopes I win, that’s good. I don’t need hope. I believe hope is for those who think winning can happen by accident. I’m not winning by accident or by his hope. I’m winning because of my hard work and because I am the best fighter.”

Du Plessis acknowledges that Adesanya will eventually get his opportunity, but he will have to wait his turn like everyone else. Du Plessis is not the one calling him out; Adesanya is calling him out. Du Plessis believes he deserves the fight, and when the time comes, he will face Adesanya.

He challenges Adesanya to prove himself when the time comes, stating, “Let’s see if he’s game. Let’s see if Adesanya is really there when the time comes. From my perspective, I think after Whittaker, just give me about five minutes. With the way I’m feeling right now, just give me five minutes and some water, and then I’ll fight him on the same night. Let’s do it next week, Saturday.”
