PFA Awards: Akpom, Saka, Haaland shine as Davido lights up event

Chuba Akpom, the new addition to Ajax, has been honored with the Championship Players’ Player of the Year award after his remarkable performance with Middlesbrough in the previous season. This recognition coincided with a vibrant performance by Nigerian artist Davido at the event, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Akpom, a striker eligible to play for the Super Eagles, excelled under the guidance of Michael Carrick, leading the goal charts in the second-tier league with an impressive 28 goals in just 40 appearances during the last campaign.

He triumphed over competitors including another player of Nigerian descent, Nathan Tella, who recently signed with Bayern Leverkusen. Tella scored 17 goals, including two hat-tricks while on loan at Burnley, significantly contributing to their title victory and promotion to the Premier League.

The category also featured nominees like Josh Brownhill of Burnley, Iliman Ndiaye of Sheffield United, Carlton Morris of Luton, and Viktor Gyokeres of Coventry City.

Bukayo Saka, an England international of Nigerian heritage, clinched the Young Player of the Year award for his exceptional performance with Arsenal in the previous season.

Davido’s performance added an entertaining interlude before the announcement of the most significant awards of the night.

On another note, Manchester City’s striker, Erling Haaland, secured the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award, prevailing over contenders like his teammates Kevin De Bruyne and John Stones, as well as Bukayo Saka, Harry Kane, and Martin Odegaard.
