The extent of Victor Osimhen’s hamstring injury, which he sustained during Friday’s friendly against Saudi Arabia, will be determined on Sunday, according to Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro. The Napoli striker left the match in the 55th minute due to a hamstring injury in his right leg, and he was able to walk off the field without assistance.
Peseiro expressed his disappointment regarding Osimhen’s injury and is considering sending him back to Napoli for further assessment, emphasizing the player’s importance to both club and country. Peseiro stated, “He wasn’t at his best, we’ll evaluate whether to send him back to Naples.” He also mentioned the importance of working in coordination with the player’s clubs, highlighting the responsibility for the players’ physical condition and the mutual respect between national teams and clubs. “Osimhen is a fantastic player, Napoli needs him, and so do we. So it’s everyone’s responsibility.”
Peseiro also indicated that regardless of the injury’s severity, Osimhen won’t be risked in Monday’s other friendly against Mozambique.
In the friendly match between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia in Portugal, no winner was determined, with both teams scoring an equalizer in the closing moments. Saudi Arabia scored their goal from a free-kick at the edge of the box that deflected off Calvin Bassey.
During the match, Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Samuel Chukwueze had opportunities to put the Super Eagles ahead in the first half but were unable to convert them. Saudi Arabia unexpectedly took the lead on the hour mark when Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, palmed the ball into his own net from a free-kick taken from far out on the right flank by Salman Al Faraj.
To address Osimhen’s injury, Peseiro substituted Terem Moffi for him and made other player changes. These changes seemed to improve Nigeria’s performance, with Kelechi Iheanacho and Moses Simon putting pressure on Saudi Arabia’s defense. Simon played a key role in Nigeria’s equalizing goal, providing an assist to Victor Boniface, who scored his first goal for Nigeria from a tight angle in the 73rd minute. Eight minutes later, Iheanacho scored a powerful goal, further boosting Nigeria’s lead.
