D’Tigers, the reigning African champions, will learn the identity of their group opponents in the upcoming Olympic qualifying tournament on October 5, according to a report from Saturday PUNCH.

The Nigerian team secured their place in the final stage of the qualifiers back in August by clinching the Women’s Afrobasketball Championship in Rwanda. In a thrilling final match against Senegal, D’Tigers emerged victorious with a score of 84-74, securing their fourth consecutive African championship title.

During the final, Nigerian player Amy Okonkwo delivered an outstanding performance, contributing 23 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists. Her remarkable performance earned her the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award for the tournament.

The encounter on Saturday marked the fourth time that Nigeria and Senegal had faced each other in competition, with Nigeria claiming victory on all four occasions. Their previous encounters took place in 2005 (with a 64-57 win for Nigeria), 2017 (a 65-48 victory for Nigeria), and 2019 (a 60-55 win for D’Tigress).

This latest victory also solidified Nigeria’s position as only the second team, after Senegal, to win four consecutive Women’s Afrobasket titles, with an impressive unbeaten run of 23 games. Additionally, D’Tigress’ head coach, Rena Wakama, made history by becoming the first female coach to win the championship since its inception in 1966. Her success marks a significant shift after 57 years of male dominance in women’s basketball coaching in Africa.

Before transitioning into coaching, Wakama had a brief playing career and represented Nigeria’s First Bank at the FIBA Africa Champions Cup for Women. She joined D’Tigress in 2015, right after graduating from college, and traveled with the team to the 2015 Women’s Afrobasket competition in Cameroon, where Nigeria finished third. Her name was initially omitted from the Nigerian national roster due to a registration deadline oversight, according to Wakama.

D’Tigress, currently ranked as the 11th team globally, last suffered a defeat in the Women’s Afrobasket in 2015, during the semi-finals against Cameroon.

According to FIBA’s update, the draw for the Olympic qualifying tournament is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 5, in Hungary.

The dominance of D’Tigress in the Afrobasket Championship has firmly established them as a formidable presence on the international stage. With their eyes set on even greater accomplishments, the team continues to inspire aspiring basketball players across Africa.
