Former Nigerian boxer, Jeremiah ‘Jerry’ Okorodudu, passed away on Wednesday night at a private hospital in Lawandon, Lagos. He had been battling a foot ulcer that left him bedridden for weeks. Okorodudu’s wife, Adenike, confirmed his death and revealed that the hospital was refusing to release his body until they settle the outstanding medical bill of N600,000.
The 64-year-old Olympian had been transferred between different hospitals due to financial constraints before being admitted to the Lawanson hospital. Remi Aboderin, the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Board of Control and President of the West Africa Boxing Union, also confirmed Okorodudu’s passing.
Azania Omo-Agege, the Vice President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, mentioned that he had sent money to Okorodudu’s wife the day before for the hospital bills. Okorodudu represented Nigeria in the middleweight category at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and won a gold medal at the Oluyole 1979 National Sports Festival in Ibadan.
His health issues began in 2020 with a boil affliction that affected his mobility. Despite a successful surgery, he experienced a relapse, diagnosed with a foot ulcer and suffering a stroke.
