Liverpool Football Club has officially announced the extension of Afolami Onanuga’s contract through their official website.
It has also been confirmed by Liverpool that Onanuga holds both Nigerian and British citizenship, making him eligible to represent both the Nigerian Golden Eaglets and the Flying Eagles.
The Anfield team has communicated that the young Anglo-Nigerian talent will commence the 2023-2024 season as a first-year scholar and has been permanently promoted to the U18s squad.
Described as a box-to-box central midfielder, Onanuga made his debut for Liverpool FC U18s as an under-16 player during the 2022-23 season. He appeared eleven times in the U18 Premier League during his final season as a schoolboy and even scored a goal against Newcastle United.
In addition, the 16-year-old made his debuts in both the FA Youth Cup and the U18 Premier League Cup. He was also included in the squad for the UEFA Youth League matches against Napoli and Porto.
Onanuga’s journey with Liverpool began at the U11 level after he was discovered playing grassroots football in Manchester by Academy scout Ricky Heywood.
Liverpool is set to kick off their new U18 Premier League season with a match against Nottingham Forest.
