“Nnaji announces that Geometric will commence electricity generation within the next two months.”

According to Bart Nnaji, Chairman of Geometric Power Group, the Geometric Power plant located in the Osisioma Industrial Layout in Aba, Abia State’s commercial hub, will initiate electricity generation within the next two months. Nnaji made this announcement during the opening ceremony of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Market Opportunities Conference, held at the Technology Incubation Centre in Aba.

The power generation will begin with one of the three General Electric turbines, and the second turbine will come online once the performance of the first one is deemed satisfactory by the team of engineers led by KS Energy of Turkey and Ben Caven, the Managing Director of Geometric Power Aba Limited. Caven, a former executive director of the National Electric Power Authority (NEPA), holds the distinction of having managed the generation, engineering, and transmission divisions of the state-owned utility.

Nnaji emphasized that the electricity generation from the Geometric Power plant will have a transformative impact on the socioeconomic development of Aba city and nine out of the 17 local government areas in Abia State, which are served by Aba Power, a member of the Geometric group.

Geometric Power has completed the construction of four new power substations and the refurbishment of three substations inherited from the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). They have also provided thousands of kilometers of cables, wires, and world-class tubular poles, comparable to those found in highly industrialized cities like Tokyo in Japan and San Francisco in California.

The final step is to supply fuel or gas to the Geometric Power plant through a 27-kilometer gas pipeline from Owaza in Ukwa West LGA, Abia State, to the plant in the Osisioma Industrial Layout on the outskirts of Aba. Nnaji acknowledged the commendable work of Oilserv, a Nigerian indigenous gas pipeline builder, in this regard.

Nnaji, a former Minister of Science and Technology and a Distinguished Professor of Engineering in the United States, revealed that although the infrastructure work, including the seven substations, thousands of kilometers of wires, and tubular poles, has been completed, the power infrastructure will only be put into operation when the Geometric Power plant becomes operational. He emphasized that the commissioning of the plant will not only enhance power supply but also improve its quality.

Describing the Aba Integrated Power Project as the sole electricity company in Nigeria that generates and distributes power, Nnaji explained that he chose to establish Geometric Power in Aba to stimulate development as the epicenter of indigenous technology and manufacturing. He further stated that with consistent, high-quality, and affordable electricity, the cost of doing business in Abia State will significantly decrease, thereby positively impacting the national economy.

Nnaji encouraged Aba businesspeople to embrace the African Continental Free Trade Area, as it will eliminate multiple taxes imposed by various local, state, and federal governments. Nigeria has already signed and ratified the agreement, attaining the status of a state party, which allows the country to export goods and services to other African nations with relative ease.

The two-day conference, which concludes tomorrow, features participants such as the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, the Nigerian Shippers Council, United Bank for Africa, and the African Export-Import Bank (AFREXIM Bank).
