The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has accused Dangote Cement Plc., a subsidiary of the Dangote Group owned by Aliko Dangote, of failing to fulfill its promises made to the families of students who lost their lives in a tragic accident involving a Dangote truck. On January 23, 2021, a Dangote truck with faulty brakes crashed into a shopping complex in Akungba Akoko, Ondo State, resulting in the deaths of six students from Adekunle Ajasin University and nine others. Among the victims was the former President of the Students’ Union Government, Adesomoju Samuel.
In a statement, NANS expressed disappointment in Dangote Cement’s failure to fulfill its promise to immortalize the victims and provide compensation to their families, more than two years after the incident. NANS has given Dangote Cement a 14-day ultimatum to fulfill its commitments and honor the victims of the accident. Failure to do so would be seen as a challenge to the association, and NANS has threatened to take aggressive action, including restricting the movement of Dangote Cement vehicles in the southwest region and shutting down the company’s operational headquarters in Lagos.
NANS emphasizes the magnitude of the tragedy and the need for accountability, empathy, and compassion towards the families of the deceased students. The association will closely monitor the developments over the next 14 days and expects Dangote Cement to fulfill its obligations.
