The Nigeria Cricket Federation’s endeavor to transform the country into the world’s fastest-growing cricket nation has received substantial backing from the International Cricket Council (ICC), as evident from the vibrant reception of the Cricket World Cup trophy on Wednesday in Lagos, as reported by The PUNCH.
Nigeria is once again included among the three African nations chosen for the trophy parade, alongside South Africa and Uganda, leading up to the ODI World Cup scheduled in India from October 5 to November 19.
Following the initial phase of the trophy tour in Abuja on Tuesday, the coveted trophy was showcased at the Tafawa Balewa Cricket Oval in Lagos on Wednesday.
William Glenwright, the General Manager of Development at the ICC, accompanied by the ICC Regional Development Manager for Africa, Patricia Kambarami, emphasized Nigeria’s significance in expanding the sport.
“Nigeria is our swiftest growing member globally. Our aim in visiting the NCF was to gain insights into their successful practices and apply them worldwide, enabling other members to replicate Nigeria’s success,” Glenwright conveyed to The PUNCH.
“We also aimed to understand the ways in which the international federation can aid Nigeria’s progress. With their remarkable plans, we have a role to play.”
Uyi Akpata, the President of the Nigeria Cricket Federation, affirmed the board’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that the country reaps the benefits of its developmental initiatives for the sport.
“With the remarkable reception and festivities surrounding the trophy’s arrival here, one can only imagine the fervor if we were to actually win the World Cup; many people anticipate that Lagos would come to a standstill,” Akpata commented.
“Thus, we are focused on advancing in that direction. Our strategic positioning is evident as we continue our dialogue with Cricket South Africa regarding player placement. It’s a strategic pathway for sustainable growth. We’ve perceived it, and it’s now up to us to traverse that path.”
Eddy Fwamba, the Trophy Tour Manager, who oversaw the journey of the trophy from South Africa to Uganda before its arrival in Nigeria, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s prospective strides in the sport’s future.
“We trust that the trophy tour will augment and amplify the efforts of the NCF in spreading the game to a wider Nigerian audience.”
