Niger coup: Tinubu holds discussions with Touray, Abubakar, and Ribadu

  • Post category:Insecurity

President Bola Tinubu convened a meeting on Tuesday with key stakeholders from ECOWAS as part of intensified efforts to address the deadlock arising from the military coup in Niger Republic.

Taking place at the presidential villa in Abuja, the gathering includes the presence of Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission; Abdulsalami Abubakar, head of the ECOWAS delegation to Niger Republic’s military junta; and Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA).

This meeting serves as an opportunity to provide President Tinubu, who serves as the Chairman of the Authority of the Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with a comprehensive briefing. It’s noteworthy that Tinubu had previously dispatched this team to engage with the leaders of the Niger military junta responsible for the overthrow of former President Mohammed Bazoum.

Sources indicate that the meeting pertains to the ECOWAS sanctions and ultimatum that were imposed on Niger to compel the coup leaders to reinstate ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. However, these actions were disregarded.

Given the situation, ECOWAS has been considering various options, including the potential for a military intervention in Niger Republic if the coup leaders remain unyielding.

More details to come later…
