Military yet to receive order to commence operations in Niger- DHQ

On Thursday, the military high command stated that it had not received any directives to initiate operations in the Niger Republic. This statement came in response to news reports claiming that the military had begun assembling troops for a military action in Niger.

The Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) had imposed sanctions on the military junta in Niger and issued a seven-day ultimatum for them to return power to a democratically elected government. ECOWAS threatened to commence military operations in the country if the junta failed to comply with the ultimatum.

However, the Director of Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, clarified in a statement that the Defence Chiefs in the region were currently meeting in Abuja to discuss the political situation in Niger and would submit their plans to the Heads of Governments and States for approval. Without this approval, the military is not authorized to carry out any operations in Niger.

Brig. Gen. Gusau emphasized that the military option is considered as the last resort, to be taken only if all other attempts to restore constitutional order fail. The Armed Forces of Nigeria await the mandate from the Authority of the Heads of States and Governments of ECOWAS before proceeding with any military operation in any member state of the organization.
