‘Joshua would have knocked out Tyson’

Former boxing world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes has expressed his belief that British-Nigerian boxer Anthony Joshua would have defeated the legendary Mike Tyson during Tyson’s prime.

Holmes, who held the world heavyweight title from 1978 to 1985, was once knocked out by Tyson in the fourth round of their title fight in New Jersey on January 22, 1988.

Now 73 years old and a member of both the International Boxing Hall of Fame and the World Boxing Hall of Fame, Holmes is making a bold assertion regarding Joshua’s abilities.

Holmes thinks that Joshua, also a former heavyweight champion, would have had the capability to knock out Tyson during his prime.

Anthony Joshua is a two-time former unified world heavyweight champion, having held titles from the World Boxing Association super, International Boxing Federation, and World Boxing Organization.

Mike Tyson, with a record of 50-6-2 and 44 knockouts, is widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in boxing history, known for his early knockout victories and intimidating presence.

Holmes explained his viewpoint, saying, “If he fought a guy like Mike Tyson, he’d win, he would have knocked out a prime Mike Tyson. There’s no doubt about it. Mike Tyson went down low and then came up and tried to throw roundhouses. But Joshua would just hit him with a straight right hand on the side of his chin, and Mike wouldn’t recover.”

He continued, “He never fought anyone who was coming up and trying to make their way in the sport. He just went in there – bang, bang, bang, and knocked everyone out. That’s how he got the reputation as a puncher. I’m not taking anything away from Mike Tyson; he kicked my butt. But I was out for two years, I had quit boxing, I hadn’t done anything for two years apart from sing with the band and travel.”
