It was tough quitting Everton – Iwobi

  • Post category:Sports

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has shed light on the challenging choice to depart Everton for Fulham during the summer transfer window.

Iwobi had been a part of Everton’s squad since his transfer from Arsenal in 2019 until Fulham acquired him for a potential fee of up to £22m.

During his tenure at Everton, Iwobi played a pivotal role in helping the team narrowly avoid Premier League relegation over the past two seasons. Recognizing his contributions, Iwobi was honored as Everton Players’ Player of The Year at the conclusion of the previous season, thanks to a series of outstanding performances.

In a conversation with The Athletic, Iwobi refrained from divulging specific details but indicated that his departure from Everton was on good terms, particularly with the fans who had warmed up to him after a challenging start in 2019.

He mentioned, “It wasn’t an easy decision (to leave). I enjoyed my time there, especially in the last couple of years. I felt like they embraced me.

“At the same time, I felt I needed a fresh challenge, and Fulham is providing me with the platform to express myself and pursue that challenge.

“There were many discussions behind closed doors—there are things I cannot disclose—but I believe it was a mutual decision between the club and me that leaving was the best solution. I wish them success, and I hold them in high regard, leaving on good terms.”
