On Thursday, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) distanced itself from the killing of eight security personnel by gunmen in the Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State on Tuesday.

The victims included soldiers, policemen, and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and they were attacked by hoodlums who set their patrol vans on fire. In a statement by its spokesman, Emma Powerful, IPOB stated that such violent attacks and loss of life were unnecessary to achieve Biafra’s freedom in their territory.

IPOB also claimed that the Federal Government was aware of the identities of those behind the attack and accused the government of working with the perpetrators to smear IPOB and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The statement emphasized that IPOB had initially pursued its separatist agenda peacefully until the government began supporting splinter groups to undermine its efforts.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has pledged to apprehend the gunmen responsible for the killings. The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, expressed sadness over the incident and vowed that the government would spare no effort to bring the culprits to justice. He extended condolences to the families of the slain security agents, acknowledging the sacrifices made by security personnel in the line of duty.

The Director of Press in the Ministry of Interior, Ajibola Afonja, conveyed the minister’s commitment to ensuring that the families of the deceased would receive support and that their memories would not be forgotten. Olubunmi-Ojo emphasized the challenging nature of the work carried out by security officers and expressed determination to investigate the incident thoroughly.
