“If you were given the opportunity to meet Tinubu, you would develop an appreciation for him,” says Seun Kuti.

Afrobeats artist Seun Kuti has expressed the belief that many of those who criticize President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would hold a different opinion of him if they had the chance to meet him.

Seun explained that some people’s negative opinions about Tinubu stem from not having the opportunity to get to know him personally.

He shared these thoughts while appearing as a guest on the latest episode of The Honest Podcast. During the discussion, Seun reflected on his own experiences growing up in Nigeria and witnessing the criticism directed towards his father, the late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, despite knowing him as a “cool guy.”

Seun remarked, “As Fela’s son, growing up in Nigeria, I couldn’t even enter my girlfriend’s father’s house. I used to wonder, ‘What is it about my father that nobody likes?’ But I knew my father; he was a cool guy. So, what was it about him that nobody liked? When I went anywhere, people would say, ‘Oh! He’s Fela’s son…’ I understand that pain. But when I look at the children of politicians, I see the same people who criticize Tinubu today praising his children tomorrow because of money. So, I understand that if you had the chance to meet Tinubu, you might have a different perspective. Your dislike for him is primarily because you haven’t had access to him.”
