Around five senior officials from the Department of Farm Inputs Support Services within the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development were apprehended by operatives from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on allegations of fund diversion.
These arrests occurred at approximately 9 am on a Thursday during a one-hour sting operation at their office, situated on the 5th Floor of the Bank of Agriculture Building, located in the Central Business District of Garki, Abuja.
Four of the detained officials were reportedly held for a period of five days before being released, with the director among them released due to health reasons.
This incident has caused a sense of tension among the employees of the Department of Farm Inputs Support Services and other related parastatals under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
According to sources, the investigation is linked to the misappropriation of funds designated for monitoring exercises and sensitization programs, causing difficulties in the monitoring and assessment of farm inputs.
Reportedly, one of the officials being interrogated had over N200 million in their bank account, while one of their children had over N100 million in their account. Additionally, a cash amount exceeding N250 million was discovered in the Abuja residence of another suspect.
Investigations carried out by ICPC detectives revealed that one of the suspects received an inflow of over N60 million in a span of six months to their bank account.
As part of the ongoing investigation, ICPC has also confiscated assets, including a bakery and a herbal hospital. When reached for comment, the spokesperson for ICPC, Azuka Ogugua, stated that the investigation is still in progress and no further details could be disclosed at this time, emphasizing the importance of avoiding media trials and noting that information will be public when the case goes to court.
