Renowned musician, Raoul John Njeng-Njeng, popularly recognized as Skales, has opened up about facing homelessness and resorting to sleeping in his car following the expiration of his recording contract with Empire Mates Entertainment (EME). Skales recounted that EME’s failure to renew his deal left him without a place to stay as he was also evicted from the apartment provided by the label.
He detailed his experiences in a recent interview with Lagos-based radio station Beat 99.9 FM. Skales revealed that his situation drastically changed after he departed from the record label owned by Banky W. The transition from a lavish lifestyle to sleeping in his car was abrupt and challenging. He lost his accommodation immediately after his contract concluded.
During this difficult period, Skales found himself with only one possession—a Ford Explorer car—which he resorted to using as a makeshift residence. His prospects seemed grim, and he even contemplated relocating abroad for a fresh start.
However, a significant turning point occurred when his song “Shake Body” gained substantial attention. Skales kept the track stored on his flash drive, unaware of the impact it would have on his life. Months later, he took a leap of faith and uploaded the song on Soundcloud without any promotional backing or resources. To his amazement, “Shake Body” quickly gained popularity, spreading like wildfire.
Skales admitted that he had initially doubted the song’s potential, but it turned out to be a game-changer. The unexpected success of “Shake Body” marked a pivotal moment in his career. He attributed his transformation to a phone call from Harry Tee, a significant figure in the industry, and acknowledged how this turn of events altered the course of his life.
