“Comedian Ayo Makun, widely known as AY, has issued a public apology to the Afrobeats artist Davido for his insensitive remark. AY faced criticism after a video of him making a distasteful joke about Davido during a recent performance in Warri circulated on social media.
In the video, AY targeted Davido in his jest, focusing on the singer’s multiple children’s mothers. AY’s own recent addition to his family, 13 years after his first child, Michelle, became a point of reference in the joke.
This comment stirred significant backlash online, with many finding it offensive and inappropriate. AY subsequently took to his official Instagram account to express his regrets and offer an apology to Davido.
He stated, ‘I deeply regret the way I delivered that joke in Warri. It shouldn’t even be called a joke anymore; it was far from humorous, unlike how it was received during my tours in Canada and the US. You have every right to be upset, especially considering how it was sensationalized by blogs.’
AY emphasized that the entertainment industry is a continual learning experience and acknowledged his accountability for the poorly executed joke. He made no excuses and reiterated his admiration for Davido, concluding with, ‘I remain your number one fan, and I love you, @davido.'”
