Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has recalled how he received a “death stare” from Sir Alex Ferguson after he opted to join the Blues instead of Manchester United in 2006.
Obi, who was 19 at the time, had reportedly agreed to join United before Chelsea swooped in and sealed a £16 million deal for him from Lyn Oslo.
The Nigerian international said that he met Ferguson a few times after the transfer and that the legendary manager had forgiven him for his decision.
“I can’t remember what happened,” Obi told the Debrief Podcast. “I think I tripped on the stairs, looked at me and just walked out. He did not say a word. It was a death stare.
“I met him a few times after that and we started talking about it and he forgot about it and he forgave me.”
Obi went on to make 403 appearances for Chelsea, winning the Premier League, Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup, League Cup, Community Shield, and FIFA Club World Cup.
He also won 89 caps for Nigeria, representing his country at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.
