“Hip-hop is not highly regarded by Nigerians – Odumodublvck.”

Prominent rapper Tochukwu Ojogwu, known as Odumodublvck, firmly believes that Nigerians do not hold a high regard for the hip-hop genre and its artists. In a recent interview with the CTRL Room, the artist behind the hit “Declan Rice” shared his past experiences, recalling how, as an emerging artist, event organizers didn’t offer him seats at award ceremonies.

Odumodublvck also mentioned a significant decision he made to pursue his own path. He recounted how a suggestion was made by his team to connect with afrobeats superstar Davido to attain fame, but he declined. Instead, he leaned towards UK grime stars whose music aligned with his artistic vision.

He expressed, “In 2019, someone [on my team] suggested we should go to Lagos and meet Davido. But I questioned, ‘What will Davido do for me? Even if Davido takes me to America and puts me on stage to perform my rap, his fans won’t relate because they are predominantly afrobeats enthusiasts.'”

Odumodublvck added that he identified more with artists like Teezee, BOJ, and Sholz, who were key figures in connecting with the UK music market, a genre more akin to his style.

He concluded by emphasizing the lack of respect for hip-hop in Nigeria, highlighting an incident at an award show where they didn’t even have seats. Additionally, he acknowledged and agreed with Wizkid’s controversial statement that “hip-hop is dead,” underscoring his satisfaction with that declaration.
