FISU Games: Team Nigeria eye podium finish

According to PUNCH Sports Extra, Team Nigeria is aiming to secure medals in their last two events at the 2023 World University Games in Chengdu, China, as the competition approaches its conclusion.

On Friday, Nigeria will be competing in the women’s singles and doubles badminton events, with hopes of podium finishes in both categories. Additionally, the male and female 4x100m relay teams are also eyeing success.

For the men’s 4x100m relay, the participants will be Thovoethin Sewakan (UNILAG), Musa Nurain (UNILORIN), King Etaohi (DELSU), and Adedigba Oluwakorede (UI). In the women’s 4x100m relay, the participants will be Adekola Tinuade (UI), Aransiola Victoria (FUNAAB), Gideon Blessing (Ignatius Ajuru University of Education), and Blessing Akintoye (FUNAAB).

Moreover, in the badminton event, athletes Abiola Motunrayo, Aminat Ilori, Idowu Oluwasegun, and Umar Mujitapha are hopeful of securing a place on the podium.

Nigeria has entered seven events at this year’s World University Games, including athletics, swimming, badminton, judo, taekwondo, table tennis, and tennis. The country is represented by 27 athletes selected from 22 schools, with the number reduced from 100 to 27 due to financial constraints that almost affected their participation in the championship.

Nigeria made its first appearance at the World University Games in 1970 and has since participated 15 times, earning a total of 70 medals.
