Fire service saved N1.5bn properties in Lagos, others in August

In August, the Federal Fire Service Zone F reported that properties worth an estimated N1.5 billion were successfully protected from fires within the zone. This zone covers Lagos, Oyo, and Ogun states.

Mr. Chika Njoku, the Assistant Controller General and Zonal Commander of Zone F, disclosed this information to the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos. During the same month, the zone responded to 22 fire calls, successfully extinguishing 13 of them and rescuing 20 individuals during these operations.

However, within the same period, the three states witnessed property losses due to fire. Lagos reported the highest number of fire incidents with 14 cases, but 12 persons were saved. The estimated property loss in Lagos was around N384.1 million, while properties worth approximately N1.2 billion were saved.

In Oyo State, there were eight fire cases, eight lives were saved, and properties worth around N38.4 million were lost, with more than N296 million worth of property saved. Ogun State reported no fire incidents, and there were no fire-related fatalities.

Njoku attributed the reduction in fire incidents compared to August 2022 to proactive measures, including public awareness campaigns and cooperation with sister agencies. In August 2022, the zone recorded 39 fire incidents, resulting in significant property losses and lives saved. The efforts of the Prevention, Regulatory, and Inspectorate Unit, combined with the assistance of other agencies, have played a crucial role in addressing fire outbreaks and saving lives and property.

Overall, the Zone F of the Federal Fire Service has been effective in reducing fire incidents and protecting both lives and properties through increased public awareness and proactive measures.
