Fela gave Nigerian musicians great platform – Singer, 9ice

Renowned musician, Alexander Adegbola Akande, widely known as 9ice, recently expressed that the late pioneer of afrobeat, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, provided Nigerian musicians with a platform to showcase their talents on a global scale.

During a recent interview with Sis Project Studios, the artist behind ‘Gongo Aso’ shared his thoughts. He emphasized that Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s influence paved the way for artists to elevate their careers. He acknowledged that while they were attempting to explore various genres like Afropop and afrobeats, Fela had already established something globally recognizable.

9ice remarked, “Fela Anikulapo-Kuti gave us the platform which is Afrobeat for us to climb on top. We were trying to do Afropop. We were trying to do afrobeats. We were trying to do different names. But Baba [Fela] already has something that the world recognized.”

The significance of afrobeat in his musical journey wasn’t lost on 9ice. He further acknowledged the impact of other legendary musicians like King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, and Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, referring to them as the “grandfathers” of their craft. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to follow in their footsteps and build upon their contributions.
