“FCCPC directs Google to remove 18 illicit loan apps from its platform.”

After BusinessDay published an article titled ‘Loan shark victims recall experiences as FCCPC steps in,’ the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) took action within six days. They ordered Google to remove 18 loan apps, including Getloan, Swiftkash, and others like JoyCash, Camellia, Cashhlawn, Nairaloan, and more, from the Play Store.

FCCPC’s executive vice chairman/CEO, Babatunde Irukera, stated that only loan apps with regulatory approval from the commission should be allowed on the Play Store. The commission had previously delisted certain loan app companies, revoking their legal status to operate. These companies were also banned from using payment gateways and services.

The commission also highlighted that some of the affected DMLs were attempting to reach customers outside the Play Store using Android Package Kits (APK) file format. The guidelines for compliance apply to all DMLs, regardless of their means of operation.

FCCPC now requires all existing and approved DMLs to submit evidence of compliance within five days and revalidate the information provided through the DL Form 001 on its website. Failure to comply will be considered a violation of the law and render such operations illegal.
