EV Subsidy Boosts Demand: The elimination of subsidies boosts the demand for electric cars as the Federal Government acquires EV vehicles from Jet Motors.

  • Post category:Business

Nigeria’s shift away from fuel subsidies seems to be driving the adoption of electric cars, as the Federal Government has recently acquired electric vehicles (EVs) from Jet Motors, a Nigerian mobility technology company. Jet Motors expressed satisfaction that the government has recognized the need for alternative mobility options in light of the removal of petrol subsidies. Oluwemimo Osanipin, the COO of Jet Motors, emphasized that EVs hold the key to the future of mobility not just in Nigeria but also in Africa and the world. He praised the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) for its support in creating an enabling environment for local automotive companies. Osanipin highlighted the importance of government commitment in terms of incentives and strategic support to make EVs mainstream in Nigeria, including policies mandating the construction of EV charging stations and investments in charging and maintenance infrastructure across the country.

The NADDC, established in 2014, aims to promote a competitive local industry for the production of vehicles. During the vehicle handover, Jelani Aliyu, the director-general of NADDC, commended Jet Motors for their innovation and commitment to sustainable mobility. He reiterated the Council’s dedication to supporting local content and transforming the mobility sector in Nigeria. Both Jet Motors and NADDC are poised to seize opportunities presented by market changes and the government’s direction.

In a separate development, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in Nigeria has confirmed a case of anthrax disease in Niger State. The chief veterinary officer, Columba Vakuru, stated that animals exhibiting symptoms of anthrax were discovered on a farm in Suleja on July 14, 2023. A rapid response team conducted investigations and collected samples, which were later confirmed to be anthrax through laboratory tests at the National Veterinary Research Institute. This is the first recorded case of anthrax in Nigeria in recent years, following an outbreak in Northern Ghana a few weeks earlier. Vakuru assured the public that the federal government, in collaboration with the Niger state government, is taking proactive measures to control and contain the outbreak. He advised people to avoid contact with infected animals or their by-products and emphasized the importance of early detection and reporting of suspected anthrax cases for effective control measures.
