Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has affirmed the federal government’s dedication to assisting over 16 million Nigerians affected by humanitarian crises nationwide. She made this commitment during a meeting with members of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in Abuja.
Edu emphasized that these humanitarian crises result from both natural disasters and human-induced factors, necessitating immediate intervention. She cited ongoing issues such as unrest in various regions and the recent flooding caused by the opening of the Lagdo Dam in another country as pressing concerns.
Furthermore, Edu announced the government’s intention to establish a Presidential Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund to address these challenges comprehensively.
She lauded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for its unwavering support of humanitarian causes in Africa, particularly in areas like poverty alleviation and healthcare. Edu called on the foundation to continue its support for Nigeria.
Edu expressed confidence in the federal government’s determination to assist vulnerable Nigerians affected by humanitarian crises through various intervention programs.
Jeremie Zoungrana, the Country Director of the foundation, reassured the minister of their readiness to collaborate closely with the ministry to address Nigeria’s major humanitarian crises. Zoungrana highlighted the foundation’s interest in health, economic opportunities, agriculture, financial inclusion, and digital innovation as means to reduce poverty and enhance productivity.
